Stars of South Africa's cricket team offer their condolences to the family of Senzo Meyiwa, who died after being shot during a burglary.
South Africa's captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead Sunday night in the Vosloorus township, southeast of Johannesburg, in an act that cut short a career that seemed headed for great success. A nation, a community and a sport mourned the tragic loss of life even as police promised to find Meyiwa's killers and punish them.
Meyiwa was in the midst of a golden run for the national team, after he was made both their keeper and captain for the 2015 African Nations' Cup (ANC) qualifying campaign following an injury to Itumeleng Khune. Meyiwa did not concede once in the four matches he'd played thus far, and led South Africa to the top of the pool and within touching distance of the tournament in Morocco next year. Not bad for a man who was not considered first choice.
In memory of Meyiwa, South Africa's marquee fixture between his club Pirates and their arch rival Kaizer Chiefs, which was due to take place Saturday, has been postponed. South Africa's weekend was bookended by tragedy. On Friday afternoon, former 800-metre world champion and Olympic medalist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi was killed in a car crash. Little more than 48 hours later, Meyiwa was killed.
He will be buried in his hometown on Saturday. Life was exposed as being short but the memory of Meyiwa will live long in the minds of the footballing public
