EBONYI NAFEST 2014
The Federal Government says it will continue to promote rapid and sustainable growth of the arts,
tourism and culture sector of the economy in demonstration of its commitment to diversify the economic base of the country.
President Goodluck Jonathan who stated this while declaring open the Twenty-Eight edition of the National Festival for Arts and Culture in Abakaliki promised to provide favourable investment climate and incentives for investors in the sector.
President Jonathan who was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo noted that the creative sector availed the nation of a development option with high capacity for economic empowerment, wealth creation, employment generation and good return on investment that would make Nigeria a tourist destination.
He observed that the festival had over the years showcased the rich cultural heritage of the nation, and enhanced intra and inter cultural linkages of various ethnic groups in the country.
The President commended the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation for developing a strategic plan that incorporated organized private sector in the structured development of the sector as well as appreciated Ebonyi State Government for hosting the event.
Governor Martin Elechi who identified culture as a veritable tool for resolving conflicts expressed concern over the impact of colonialism on the culture of indigenous people in the country.
The Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke and the Director General, National Council for Arts and Culture Mrs. Dayo Keshi emphasized that culture was a platform for national unity and stressed the need for the sustenance of the nation’s cultural heritage to continue to play its pivotal role in national integration.
The event featured match past by contingents from various states and the FCT while Command performances was earlier held in honour of the participants.
The Vice-President also inaugurated the multi-million naira International Conference Centre, built by Ebonyi State Government in Abakaliki, during which he stressed the need for continuity by successive administrations in the execution of government projects to reduce cases of abandoned projects in the country.
